A short trip down memory lane with Charlotte's Web by E.B. White

I first read Charlotte’s Web when I was around 10 years old. Or if I am being accurate I first had Charlotte’s Web read to me by my teacher (the lovely Miss Grant) when I was 10 years old.  I had recently moved schools, I was lonely and unhappy but I had a long standing love of books (even at that young age) which gave me the escape I needed.

Charlotte’s Web is not a story I would have selected myself. I read The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Asterix stories…I didn’t read books about spiders and pigs.  At least I didn’t when I was 10 but when you are stuck in a classroom and your teacher is reading to you it is rude not to listen. How glad I was that I paid attention. Magic happened.

30 years later I still love the memory of Charlotte’s Web. I want to read it to my kids so that they too can experience the delights.

They MUST know about Wilbur. They should know about life in the barn and just why Wilbur is ‘Some Pig’.  But number 2 son is still a bit too young and his big brother heard his mum mention how she wept buckets when she read it – now he is avoiding reading it too.

I will wear him down – bribery will likely work until I can get him into Chapter One – at that point the magic will take over and a new generation will enjoy this timeless classic.

Why can’t you get Hardy Boys books any longer though?
